In October 2009 I was fortunate enough to be selected to travel from Canada to Taipei joining the Taiwan International Medical Training Center Program in my career of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They arranged for my studies and observation at Taipei City Hospital and in the beginning I really had no idea what to expect.

I was amazed on my first day to see a hospital of this size that was specifically run for the purpose of Chinese medicine. From my understanding it is the largest hospital in Taipei for Chinese medicine which made the decision to come here all that much easier. On day one I was shown around the facilities being introduced to various departments.  On the first floor you could find the internal medicine department where from my observation was specific to herbal prescriptions and diagnosis. On the 9th floor was the acupuncture department, paediatric department with full facilities for mom and child, as well as the rehabilitation department.  Being my background in rehabilitation in Canada I chose not to spend time in this department, although I think observing  the approach from this aspect would be extremely beneficial for anyone in the health field. If I were to return I would like to spend time here as I am very interested in the treatment of bones, joints, and soft tissue in relation to meridian manipulation, as well the theory behind herbal steams for injuries was definitely an intriguing approach.

On my arrival I was immediately met and welcomed into the program with information to help me decide my interests, and what I wanted to specifically observe during my time at the hospital. I found it amazing to see how Chinese medicine could be separated into so many different categories allowing the best possible care specific for the patients needs. The Doctors who I followed had so much knowledge and were willing to share anything they possibly could in regards to their treatment strategies, being herbal formula’s or acupuncture prescriptions.  The faculty and students were so good at translating everything never did I feel ‘lost’ as to what was happening with patient’s treatments, and I was always welcome to ask questions if I needed.

If I had to choose one thing that will stick out from my time spent here it was following along while treating the cerebral palsy children. I found this amazing to watch in order to get an understanding on treatments to help with the main causes, the root cause, and how to treat, and select herbal prescriptions and acupuncture treatments for each individual case. This was truly amazing as in Canada I don’t have the opportunity to see so many children or adults suffering with these types of pathologies.

Over all my experience at Taipei city hospital is one I will not forget. I learned so much that I can take home with me in such a limited time and hope that I can return one day. Everyone I met here went above and beyond in all aspects.  I highly recommend anyone interested in learning more about Chinese medicine from a student or professional aspect to think about coming here, as my experience was highly beneficial and my only regret was not being able to spend more time here.

Chris Sitter
